Today is the last day of Anti-Racism & Inclusivity Week!

Our Portrait of a Graduate pushes each of us to have a commitment to ourselves, our learning and others. We hope that this year’s Anti-Racism Week gave you plenty of opportunities to reflect and connect with other students on this important topic of diversity and inclusion. Today is the LAST DAY of events. Check them out below…

ONGOING: Toiletry Drive

We are STILL collecting travel-sized toiletries for financially fragile students living in nearby Keshena, WI.  We will take all unused shampoo, conditioner and body wash, which can be dropped off in any of the bins located at the PWC, Forum and Sportscenter!

TODAY

Identity and Values Gallery: Join the Latin American Student Organization during all lunch periods in the East Commons for a gallery walk featuring LASO members’ artwork and writings about personal values that connect with their culture. Participants will be able to learn, take pictures and write about their values and ways they can connect to Stevenson’s community values inside text bubbles.

Guest Speaker Dr. Yohuru Williams, Distinguished University Chair and Professor of History and founding director of the Racial Justice Initiative at the University of St. Thomas, will speak during Periods 4-5 in the Recital Hall.

Pledge to Inclusion: Best Buddies invites all Patriots to recommit to inclusion at Stevenson. Join us during lunch periods in the East and Wood Commons.

Inclusive LGBTQ+ Policies: Lake County Clerk Anthony Vega will be visiting us to speak about LGBTQ+ policies after school today in Room 2104.

New Artist Moves Into Visiting Artist Gallery

Stevenson is proud to feature Tiffany Gholar in the 2022-2023 Visiting Artist Series! Gholar’s exhibit, Post Consumerism, features artworks created using otherwise disposable, one-time-use material imbued with a new sense of permanence and purpose through artmaking. Post Consumerism will be exhibited in the Visiting Artist Gallery (first floor rotunda, West Building) through April 14. Learn more about Tiffany and her art here

shsHacks Takes Over Stevenson.. and Instagram!

Our hugely popular 24-hour coding event, shsHacks, is making a comeback as an in-person event after two years! Girls in STEAM Club and Computer Science Club have worked incredibly hard to put together what will be an exciting night for coders of all experience levels.

We’ll be handing over the @stevensonhs Instagram handle to our very own Senior Riddhi Bhagwat to help capture the event. Bhagwat has been a member of Stevenson’s Girls in STEAM Club since her freshman year but has since taken on leadership roles.

“With the onset of the pandemic, we had to switch to a virtual event for 2021 and then a hybrid version with a primarily virtual component for 2022. This year, we are back fully in-person and I can’t wait to see our months of hard work, from gathering company sponsors to designing the theme and structure of the hackathon, all come to fruition this weekend,” Bhagwat says. “It is extremely gratifying to see the event come to life to unite hundreds of passionate students, regardless of demographics as they create the most unique ideas, fostering hope for an even brighter future.”

Make sure to follow along @StevensonHS for a peek at all the fun!

Tonight is the Career Ready/Trade Expo!

A kind reminder for our Stevenson families: Tonight is Stevenson’s first Career Ready/Trade Expo hosted by the College Career Center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Wood Commons. This event will highlight careers that have limited (if any) educational requirements after high school.

Sample careers that will be represented include real estate agent, traditional trades (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, etc.), cosmetology, manufacturing, pharmacy technician, dental assistant, auto body repair, police, fire and EMT. There will also be College of Lake County reps to discuss how their programming can help prepare students for some of these types of careers.

Donate Blood and Save Three Lives

Next Friday, March 10, National Honor Society will host its Spring Blood Drive in honor of Jake Kingan. During a 24+ hour surgery, Jake needed 28 units of blood to get him through the surgery. With the blood bank low on blood, we are grateful that Jake still received what he needed to survive his surgery. Please consider donating blood so others, like Jake, have what they need during surgery or chemo.

The blood drive will take place in the PAC from 3rd to 8th period. All donors must be 17 years old, meet certain health requirements and register for an appointment slot. All information, including how to register, can be found here

Guest Speaker to Share About Career in Law

We are excited to welcome Marnie Slavin, judge for the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit, to Stevenson on Wednesday, March 8! Sophomore, junior and senior students will have the opportunity to learn about why she chose law, what her typical day as a judge looks like, and things to consider in high school or undergrad if you’re interested in a career in law.

This event will take place during all lunch periods in Room 2104. Students must sign-up here.
