Anti-Racism & Inclusivity Week Kicks Off Today!
As Black History Month comes to an end, Stevenson rolls right into another unity event, “Anti-Racism & Inclusivity Week.”
This year’s theme is “Living Our Values As An SHS Community,” and Stevenson believes in the importance of diversity as a shared value within our school community.
There are events every day, including fun activities during the lunch hours and interesting presentations after school.

This event will highlight careers that have limited (if any) educational requirements after high school. Sample careers that will be represented include: real estate agent, traditional trades (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, etc.), cosmetology, manufacturing, pharmacy technician, dental assistant, auto body repair, police, fire and EMT. There will also be representatives from College of Lake County to discuss how their programming can help prepare students for some of these types of careers. Scholarships, Scholarships, Scholarships: Apply Now!
DEADLINE TO APPLY ~ APRIL 1: The Jean Paul Ohadi Foundation through the Deerfield Chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is offering a $2,500 scholarship for LGBTQ youth 17 years or older applying to attend (or currently attending) a post-secondary educational institution. The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding gay, lesbian, and transgender youth from the community; to encourage continuing education for self-identified lesbian and transgender youth; and to foster a positive image of lesbian and transgender young people in society. Deadline to apply is April 1.
DEADLINE TO APPLY ~ APRIL 28: The Marianjoy 2023 Education Scholarship proudly awards scholarships to students with disabilities to help them to further their education, pursue opportunities for growth, explore new possibilities and achieve their dreams. Seniors are eligible to apply if they have a permanent physical disability that may have resulted from: brain injury, musculoskeletal impairments (such as amputation or multiple trauma), neuromuscular disorders (such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and Guillain-Barré syndrome, spinal cord injury, or stroke). Seniors must be planning on enrolling in a half-time or part-time course of study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic merit and career goals. Deadline to apply is Friday, April 28.
Deadline Is Saturday To Run…Walk…And Fundraise For Kenya! There is still time to sign up and fundraise for a great event next month hosted by the National Honor Society: Kilometers For Kenya. It is a team walking/running competition on MARCH 11 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Fieldhouse, and each lap completed will be a donation towards the Angaza Center. The Angaza Center is a nonprofit organization that empowers students in rural African schools with information technology literacy that is critical for attaining economic and social prosperity. The last day to register a team is SATURDAY, and Team Captains can register here. Boys Swim And Dive Takes Third Place At State Finals!
At the IHSA Boys State Swimming And Diving Championship over the weekend in Westmont, Stevenson took third as a team with 122.50 points, marking the second straight year the Patriots have placed at state after last year’s state championship.
Stevenson finished second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:31.98 behind Michael Wyrocki, David Kohan, Colin Zhang and Diego Rosario-Freytes (pictured top left). Zhang went on to finish fifth in the 200 IM (1:50.14) and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.93). Wyrocki tied for fifth place in the 100-yard backstroke with a 49.53.
Jack Curtin joined Liam Plautz, Rosario-Freytes and Zhang (pictured top right) to take third in the meet-ending 400-yard free relay at 3:04.51. And diver Danny Silverstein (pictured right) took sixth with an overall score of 474.95.

Sulejmani Finishes Fourth At State Wrestling! At the IHSA Girls Wrestling State Championship in Bloomington over the weekend, junior Sajra Sulejmani took fourth place in the 145-pound weight class. Last year, Sulejmani placed fifth in the 145-pound weight class at state. |
Boys Hoops Takes Regional Crown! For the fourth straight season, and the 15th year overall, the Stevenson boys basketball team won a regional title. The Patriots (22-7, 11-3) won the Lake Zurich Regional over the weekend with a 50-36 victory over Hersey. Aidan Bardic scored a team-high 18 points and added 2 assists. Michael Maloney contributed 10 points along with 2 rebounds and 3 assists. David Sulnius put up 9 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. Jack Dabbs had a team-high 8 rebounds and 3 steals. The Patriots head to Barrington High School on Wednesday to take on Prospect in the sectional semifinals. Tip off is at 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased via GoFan. Sports Events Ahead
WEDNESDAY ~ Boys Basketball Sectional Semifinal: The Patriots head to Barrington High School on WEDNESDAY to take on Prospect in the sectional semifinals. Tip off is at 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased via GoFan.
Sports Results
Boys Hockey: The Patriots played Evanston in the second round of the AHAI State Championships and won 6-2, propelling them into the Elite 8. Max Poretto started off the scoring for Stevenson in the first, followed by Davis Jegers, both goals went unassisted. Ethan O’Gradney scored the third goal, assisted by Jimmy Brown. With 30 seconds left in the second period, Poretto scored his second goal, assisted by Zach Kulick. In the third period, Stevenson’s final two goals were both scored on power plays: the first by Brandon Schultz, assisted by Will Harlow and the second by Harlow, assisted by Poretto. During the game, Jegers (pictured above left) broke the all-time Stevenson hockey scoring record. He now has 124 points! Next up for the Patriots is Glenbrook North (Green) on Saturday at 6:50 p.m. at The Edge.
Boys Track and Field: The Patriots traveled to Huntley for their first meet of the indoor season. Marcus Caselberry was the highlight for Stevenson, finishing first in the 60-meter dash with a 7.12, second in the 200-meter with a 23.11 and first in 60-meter hurdles with a 8.62. Alex Xie received third in the triple jump with a 12.25. Overall, the Patriots finished fifth with a score of 34. Next up for the team is a home meet against Cary-Grove and Vernon Hills at 4:45 p.m. on March 7.
Girls Track and Field: Stevenson had its first indoor meet of the season with several high finishes. Hadley Thomas finished third in the 60-meter dash with a 7.9. Ava Wilson also finished third in 200-meter with a 27.5. Adeline Gobble placed first in the 800-meter with a 2:29.8. Anna Edgecomb finished second in the 1600-meter with a 6:12.5. The Patriots finished first (Stella Plendl) and third (Isabel Edgecomb) in the 3200-meter. Hurdler Allie Wasserman placed second in the 60-meter with a 10.7. Wilson, Thomas, Kailey Miller and Katelyn Robinson finished third in the 4×200 relay with a 2:01.5 while the 4×800 relay team also finished third with an 11:29.1, run by Allison Castro, Sophia Pan, Minnie Shao, and Olivia Ruiz. In the field events, Ngendzang Fon-Ndikum placed second in the shot put with a 9.95. Wasserman took first in the long jump with a 4.57 meters. Eileen Li jumped a 1.32 meters in the high jump, placing second. Next up for the Patriots is the Huntley Invite on March 11.
