Stevenson Seniors Tello-Lopez and Biel Earn National Distinction From College Board
Two Stevenson seniors, Alan Tello-Lopez and Carmen Biel, have been named award winners for the College Board National Recognition Program.
Tello-Lopez and Biel earned this distinction because of their academic achievements in school as well as outstanding performance on the PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, and/or the AP Exams.
The specific awards that Tello-Lopez and Biel were eligible for are: the National Hispanic Recognition Award, the National African American Recognition Award, the National Indigenous Recognition Award and the National Rural and Small Town Recognition Award.

Canine Cuteness Is Coming To Stevenson
The Animal Welfare Club will have its next meeting after school on Tuesday and is happy to welcome back Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Firefighter Michael Vitale and his partner K9 Irie, a 4-year-old female German Shepherd. The team is on the Illinois state urban search and rescue team as a nationally certified live find disaster K9 search team. During her time off, Irie enjoys chasing birds and squirrels, swimming in the river, and playing fetch.
Register For Second Semester AP Exams
Advanced Placement Exam Registration is now open for second semester AP Courses. Registration instructions are below and on the Stevenson Advanced Placement webpage. The deadline to order an exam is Mar. 8. No orders will be accepted after the deadline. Registration is a two-step process and both steps must be followed:
- STEP 1 – Students “join” their AP courses in their College Board account using the unique join code provided by their AP teacher for each AP course. Students should see “Registered for Exam” in their CB accounts.
- STEP 2 – Pay for exams online in Total Registration. The cost for each exam is $100. A minimum deposit of $40 per exam is required at the time of the initial order with payment in full required by Mar. 8.
No. 100! Boys Swim Coach Doug Lillydahl Celebrates Milestone Victory
It was a big Thursday night for the No. 1-ranked boys swim team. The Patriots earned a rivalry win over North Suburban Conference rival Libertyville and also celebrated a milestone for longtime coach Doug Lillydahl, who logged his 100th career coaching victory.
Lillydahl led the program for eight seasons (1996-97 through 2003-04), then returned to the helm in 2015-16. His overall dual-meet record is 100-17.
Stevenson has won state championships in six events during his tenure. Additionally, Lillydahl has guided the Patriots to seven top-10 finishes at the IHSA state finals, including second-place showings in 2003 and 2004. His teams have captured seven North Suburban Conference championships and seven IHSA regional titles. Stevenson also grabbed the Lake County Invitational crown 11 times, including the last seven consecutive years under Lillydahl.
Athletic Results
Patriettes: With an incredible routine, the Patriettes (right photo) took home first place in the North Suburban Conference Championship with a score of 95.10, which was 2.53 points ahead of second-place Lake Forest. Next up for the Patriettes is the sectional competition on Saturday, Jan. 22, beginning at 2 p.m. at Deerfield.
Boys Swimming: In head coach Doug Lillydahl’s 100th victory on Thursday, the Patriots prevailed 120-48 over Libertyville to advance to 3-0 in the North Suburban Conference and 4-0 overall on the season. They were winners of 11 of the 12 events. Individual Event winners included: Jack Motl (200 Free), Josh Song (200 IM), Colin Zhang (50 Free, 100 Fly), Max Lapointe St Georges (100 Free), Jonny Farber (100 Back), and Lance Bi (100 Breast). The Patriots also swept all three relays, including: the 200 Medley Relay (Michael Wywrocki, Bi, Farber and Lapointe St Georges) and the 200 Free Relay (Felix Wang, Lapointe St Georges, Motl and Zhang). Stevenson is now headed to New Trier for the annual Trevian Relays Invitational on Saturday to take on many of the state’s top-ranked teams. The meet starts at 1 p.m.
Girls Basketball: The Patriots got their 20th win of the season, rolling past Palatine last night 61-44 to move to 20-1 overall. Ava Bardic was the top scorer with a game-high 21 points. Again, Emory Klatt was a force under the basket and put up 16 points. Rounding out the high scorers was Simone Sawyer with 12 points. There were two events happening in conjunction with the game. Junior High Night brought out Junior Patriot players and coaches while Students Helping Soldiers also hosted its annual “Hoops For Heroes” event to honor those who have served America. Next up for the Patriots is North Suburban Conference rival Libertyville at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Stevenson is 8-0 in NSC play.
Boys Basketball: The Patriots will host Libertyville at 7 p.m. tonight in a key North Suburban Conference game that is also a “Hoops For Hereos” event, sponsored by Students Helping Soldiers. Please bring donations to the Sportscenter for our military heroes.
Boys Bowling: The Patriots (13-3 overall, 2nd place in the North Suburban Conference) ended the regular season with a 6-on-6 win against visiting Glenbrook North on Senior Night. Stevenson was led by senior Jacob Sroka, who shot his career-high series of 726 with a high game of 250. Junior Ender Starr followed Sroka with a 615 and a high game of 238. Senior Matthew McGowan shot 593 and a high game of 214, senior Braden Kunik shot 586. Senior Kellen McGowan also added a 436 to the victory. The seniors honored were: Jacob Sroka, Matthew McGowan, Kellen McGowan, Braden Kunik, Eric Vondrak, Nayan Menezes, Ashton Valeroso as well as early graduating junior Mickey Kishi. Next up is the regional tournament which Stevenson hosts at Fairhaven Lanes in Mundelein starting at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

Navient will cancel $1.7 billion in private student loan debt and pay out $95 million to borrowers it is accused of steering into costly repayment plans.
The White House Will Distribute 10 Million More COVID Tests Per Month To Schools
With schools all over the country struggling to deal with a surge of Coronavirus cases from the Omicron variant, the White House on Wednesday announced it is increasing the supply of COVID-19 tests for schools to help keep facilities open for in-person learning. President Biden and others in his administration insist schools should stay open, even with the Omicron wave making it harder than ever to manage. The administration will increase the number of COVID tests available to schools by 10 million per month — 5 million rapid tests and 5 million lab-based PCR tests.
