When it comes to TV, movie or stage performances, “behind the scenes” special effects can bring that extra magical touch that really brings a story to life. In Stevenson’s upcoming fall musical “SpongeBob,” freshman Vibha Muppidi has the unique opportunity to play one of the musical’s “foley fish,” creating fun sound effects alongside her collaborator, senior Nathan Zarkowsky.
“I have really enjoyed the whole creative process of making sounds from objects that you don’t normally use,” Vibha says. “For instance, there is a scene in the musical where the characters stretch a sofa, so we use pop tubes to create that sound. We also have squeaky toys for SpongeBob’s steps.”
Read more about Vibha and her role in “SpongeBob,” which premieres on Friday, Nov. 19, on either Facebook or Instagram.
Mark Your Calendars For An Early Thanksgiving Dismissal
We want to make Stevenson families aware of an important change to our school calendar. Typically, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is an early dismissal day in which the school day ends one hour early at 2:35 p.m. This year, we will be altering the schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 24 so that school starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 1:25 p.m. We will send additional reminders to families in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving weekend.
By The Numbers: Math Team Surges To No. 1 In 50-Team League
The Stevenson Math Team hosted local area high schools Buffalo Grove, Fremd, Niles North, and Vernon Hills last week in the second of five North Suburban Math League (NSML) competitions. The Patriots won in decisive fashion with a total score of 289 points. Fremd placed second with 244 points. The win also puts Stevenson in first place across the entire league of more than fifty schools. Perfect papers were submitted by freshmen Audrey Hong and Aaroh Tak, juniors Ben Chen and Jack Chen, and senior Lillian You.
After two qualifying rounds, Stevenson is also the No. 2 seed in the 2021 AreteLabs/AMC Math Madness National Championship. Math Madness is a bracket style math tournament in which high schools across the country compete head-to-head by answering competition level math problems. Stevenson is looking to defend its 2020 title as the round of 64 continued this week.
By the way, it is not too late to join the Math Team. Fall athletes and new members are invited to join anytime by visiting the Math Team’s website or by e-mailing Mr. Kim at pkim@d125.org.
