College Night For First Generation Students Set For Next Week
Stevenson will host its annual college night for students (and their families) who are the first in their family to navigate the undergraduate admissions process in the United States.
The First Generation to United States Undergraduate Admission Night will be held virtually at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The event will consist of four mini-sessions from 6:30-9:10 p.m. Families can select from a variety of mini-session topics based on their personal needs. The 35-minute sessions are an introduction to topics that will be explained more during College Career Center future events.

Bright Lights And Neon For Homecoming Football Tonight!
It’s a NEON-OUT! Get on your brightest, boldest neon and come cheer on your Patriots tonight in one of the biggest football games of the season: Stevenson’s Homecoming battle against North Suburban Conference foe Zion-Benton. The 1-4 Patriots are looking to bounce back after a loss to Warren last week while 2-3 Zion-Benton is coming off a loss to Lake Zurich. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students (ages 5-18) and $3 for Seniors (ages 60+). Click here to purchase tickets in advance.
Stevenson Takes Second At Illinois Congressional Debate
Hundreds of debaters from northern Illinois gathered at Rolling Meadows High School last weekend, including more than 80 from Stevenson, for the Illinois Congressional Debate Association‘s first in-person tournament in more than a year. Stevenson’s student-led Congressional Debate team got the school year off to a good start by finishing second as a team in the large school sweepstakes.
Aditi Ambravan was elected as the new state “Captain of Captains” out of all Illinois high school debate captains to represent Illinois Congressional Debate. Only one person has this title per year, and she is the first “Captain of Captains” in Stevenson history!
Stevenson earned first-place legislation submitted by Maddie Wang and Sarah Zhang on a bill to reduce carbon emissions. For varsity chambers, Evelyn Jiang, Anthony Makhovic and Maddie Wang earned Best Presiding Officer while Sarah Zhang and Jesenia Parthasarathy each got a first place. For Novice chambers, Natalie Garayeva and Youssef Mansour earned Best Presiding Officer while Alexander Xie, Rajan Sukathme, Sowmika Mannava and Eshaam Batthad each won a first place.
Homecoming Week Ends With Big Weekend

Don’t forget about the PPA’s Treat Day, in which free ice cream treats will be passed out during all lunch periods today in the Wood Commons and the Glass Commons. Later this afternoon (2:45 p.m.), the Pep Assembly will take place at the Stadium, which also hosts tonight’s Homecoming football game at 7:30 p.m.
And then of course, the Homecoming Dance is from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Saturday night at Stevenson’s Fieldhouse and Pool Patio.
REMINDER: Don’t forget to purchase your tickets for the Homecoming Dance! Homecoming Dance ticket sales end at 5 p.m. Saturday. Guest ticketing for the Homecoming Dance is already closed.
And please note: Heels cannot be worn on the Fieldhouse court surface. We strongly encourage students wear flats or sneakers or wedges to avoid having to remove their heels to dance. We will be providing socks for any students who wish to take their shoes off to dance.
Save 3 Lives: Sign Up To Donate Blood Next Week
Did you know that a single blood donation can save as many as three lives? The National Honor Society is hoping that you will participate in its very special service experience by donating blood at the NHS Blood Drive on Oct. 8. The blood drive will run from Periods 3 through 8 in the Wrestling Room. Students must be 17 or older and weigh at least 110 pounds. Donations also help to support the Stevenson To College (S2C) program. Fishing Team Comes Up Big on Long Lake
The fishing team reeled in one big catch after another Tuesday on Long Lake. Matthew Qualich and Charlie Grisamore stole the show and took first place with three fish weighing 4.86lbs total. Liam Plautz and John Wall came in second with the big fish of the night, a 1.94lb behemoth that emerged from the depths of Long Lake to devour a spinner bait entirely. Michael Newman came in third with a slightly smaller but still respectable bass. The Patriots continue the season tomorrow on the Chain of Lakes in their sixth ICASSTT tournament of the fall. This one will involve more than 30 teams.
What’s On Tap For Monday’s Activity Period
During Monday’s activity period, ALL JUNIORS will be meeting with group guidance. Meanwhile, here is a list of groups currently scheduled to meet during the activity period: Patriot Pride (Student Activities Office), Student Congress (West Faculty Dining Room), Peer Tutors Eboard (7100 or East Side Classroom).
Math Team Gets Season Started With Win
It’s competition season again for the Stevenson Math Team! On Wednesday, 41 Stevenson mathematicians traveled to Niles West, competing in the first of five North Suburban Math League competitions. The Stevenson squad won the site with 286 points and currently sits in third place among the 50-plus schools across the league. Perfect papers were written by freshman Aaroh Tak and sophomores Angela Guo, Keona Liu, Ethan Zhang, Vidushi Gupta, and Kevin Shen. Senior Andrew Liu’s oral presentation on Divisibility won top honors across the league, capturing 49 of a possible 50 points.
Girls Field Hockey Gets Homecoming Festivities Started Tonight At Stadium
Along with the other Homecoming festivities tonight, the girls field hockey team will be hosting a game against Homewood-Flossmoor at the Stadium that precedes the varsity football game. Start time for the field hockey game is 5:30 p.m. and there is no admission charge.

Athletic Results
Girls Golf: The Patriots captured their third Regional championship in a row, winning the Libertyville Regional with a 311. Senior Emily Duan finished tied for fourth with sophomore Chelsea She, both shooting a 4-over-76. Sophomore Megan Lee added a 79 and junior Allie Santos finished with an 80, for seventh and ninth place respectively. Next up is the Sectional at Timber Pointe on Monday.
Girls Swimming & Diving: Stevenson topped North Suburban Conference foe Libertyville 121-48 as Nora Kowalski won diving by breaking her own 6-dive score of 270.30. Other individual winners were Milena Busma (100 yard fly), Amy Andres (500 yard free) and Jennifer Chen (100 yard backstroke). The 400 yard free relay (Isabelle Gattone, Stephanie Kirova, Elizabeth White, and Claudia Rzeznik) also took first place.
Boys Soccer: After a scoreless first half, Stevenson got two second-half goals to shut out Waukegan, 2-0. Dania Sokolozsky scored off of an assist by Kohei Mori and Adam Hamad scored off of an assist by Daniel Saltzman. A strong defensive effort helped carry the Patriots. Stevenson returns to action at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Timothy Christian.

Earlier this month, junior Riddhi Bhagwat was selected part of the youth delegation to represent at the 2021 YOUNGA™ Forum. YOUNGA will connect more than 2,000 youth delegates across 130 countries with top-level decision-makers and influencers to co-create solutions to global challenges related to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. YOUNGA Youth Delegates hold the important role of representing the voice of young people—along with their region—in key dialogues and interactive sessions.
Tutors Wanted: Inside The Nationwide Sprint To Build Big New Programs To Catch Students Up
Several states and many school districts are launching massive tutoring programs of their own with coronavirus relief money. The idea is not just sporadic after-school homework help, but tutors working with small groups of students, during the school day, two or three times a week — the kind of “high dosage” tutoring that’s considered one of the most promising strategies for catching students up. But finding tutors has been harder than many expected, as a national labor shortage and educator exhaustion complicate recruiting and hiring.
