14 Patriots Named Among Top High School Students in Biology Competition
Stevenson’s Biology Olympiad Club participated in the USA Biolympiad, the country’s premiere biology competition for high school students. All competitions were held virtually this year, with 28 students competing in the Open Exam. Of those, 13 competed in the Semifinals, and one student qualified as a national Finalist.

Recognizing a Rising Star in Career and Technical Education
Congratulations to our very own student Andrew Drag for recently winning gold in the SkillsUSA Illinois Championships. The competition brings together more than 2,000 career and technical education students who compete in 100 different trade, technical and leadership fields, including electronics, computer-aided drafting, precision machining, medical assisting and culinary arts.
Andrew competed against other students proving their skills as an emergency medical technician and placed as a gold medalist in that category! Congrats to Andrew, and thank you to all Stevenson Tech Campus students who competed!

Grab Some Popcorn and Enjoy the SNN Film Fest!
Don’t forget to join the Stevenson Networks News (SNN) for the 19th Annual SNN Film Fest this Friday, May 21 at 7 p.m. via Zoom. Families are in for a fun-filled night of student-made short films and the last 30 Random Student of the Day airings!
Families should use their student’s d125.org email to access the film fest. Anyone who needs to access the event with a different email address can make a special accommodation request to the SNN team by 5:00 p.m.
Tutoring During Finals Week
All tutoring for the week of May 24 will be offered both in-person and through Zoom. Students should check the ILC/ELC Tutoring Canvas pages for the exact availability of specific tutors. The hours for ILC/ELC tutoring for the last week of school are:
- Monday, May 24 – 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
- Tuesday, May 25 – 7:00 – 8:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
- Wednesday, May 26 – 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 1:00 – 5:30 p.m.
- Thursday, May 27 – 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Athletic Results for May 20
Baseball
The Patriots stayed in it until the end, but Saint Viator pulled away late in a 10-8 victory in a 10-inning marathon. The game was tied at six with Saint Viator batting in the top of the tenth when Tony Pluta homered on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs. The Patriots collected 16 hits and Saint Viator had 11 in the high-scoring affair. Salgado took the loss for the Patriots, allowing five hits and four runs over four innings and striking out one. The Patriots host the Libertyville Wildcats Saturday for a conference matchup at 10:00 a.m.
Softball
Stevenson had a nice bounce back win against Libertyville, ending in a 16-6 victory. Libertyville scored 1 run in the top of the 1st, but Stevenson responded with 10 in the bottom on singles by Hailey Langer, Haily Mulvihill, and Michaela Duffy, doubles by Haley Barnes, Lexi Gitler and Elle Ruchim and a 2 run home run by Reagan Koenigs. The slugging continued with 3 more runs in the 3rd on Singles by Allie Stevens and Reagan Koenigs and a double by Phoebe Guercio. Reagan Koenigs was credited with the victory and pitched the distance. Next up for Stevenson is a meeting with the Zion-Benton Zeebees on Monday, May 24, in Lincolnshire at 4:45 p.m.
Girls Soccer
Stevenson defeated NSC opponent Mundelein by the final score, 3-0, with all three goals coming in the second half. Leading the charge was sophomore Bella Chavez who scored the first goal off a free kick, followed by senior Gabi Nyc who scored off Bella Chavez’s corner kick. The third goal was scored by senior Abby Kalou, assisted by Bella Chavez. Keeper Mandy Meliker has yet to allow a goal during conference play this season as the Patriots remain undefeated in the NSC. The Varsity Girls’ next match is Tuesday, May 25, against Warren Township High School at 6:30 p.m. at the SHS Stadium.
Boys Water Polo Sectional Quarterfinal
Stevenson defeated McHenry by a score of 28-2 and advanced to tonight’s semi-final matchup with Deerfield at 7:30 p.m. in the SHS Aquatic Center. Tickets can be purchased for $6.00. Goalie Mark Younan started his first sectional game with 13 saves. Dimitriy Kobets led the team with 5 goals, 6 assists, and 2 steals. Jacob Whiting and Olin Kusevskis also added 4 goals in the win.

What American Kids Need This Summer
Many districts are planning for summer school this year. According to a survey conducted in April by the Center on Reinventing Public Education, the number of schools urban school district offering some form of summer programming jumped 32 percent compared to last year. A look at how some schools are tackling social emotional learning this summer.
Buffalo Grove Rotary Club Offering Scholarships to Buffalo Grove, Stevenson High School Students
The Buffalo Grove Rotary Club is offering scholarships of up to $2,000 each for Buffalo Grove, or Stevenson High School graduates preparing to attend a four-year college or a program in the public safety field. The deadline to apply is fast approaching, and is on Tuesday, June 1.
