Math Team Wins National Championship
Stevenson’s Math Team competed and won the 2020 Arete Labs Math Madness National Championship against The Harker School (San Jose, CA), 38-37 on Dec. 15, 2020. Sixty-four schools from throughout the United States competed in single-elimination matches for six rounds. Each week, the top five students’ scores were counted as the team score. Sophomore Grecycen Ren finished with the fourth-best individual score in the competition. Stevenson also won the 2017 Arete Labs Math Madness National Championship.
The following students had scores that would qualify for the top five:

Students Selected to Participate in All-State Musical Festivals
Congratulations to the members of the Stevenson band, choir and orchestra programs who were selected to participate in the 2021 Illinois Music Education Association All-State Festivals. The honorees include:
Band: Justin Chung (junior, alto saxophone), Yumin Kim (senior, flute), Adina Shaikh (senior, percussion), Trinity Shin (sophomore, flute), Aishwarya Sundar (senior, contrabass clarinet) and Rosie Wang (junior, flute)
Choir: Arjun Nair (sophomore, tenor) – All-State Chorus and Jordan Winkelman (junior, soprano) – Honors Chorus
Orchestra: Dylan Ivanov (junior, viola), Eileen Kan (junior, cello), Bella Kim (senior, viola), Ruth Kim (sophomore, violin), Julie Kim (sophomore, viola), Vaishnavi Sankar (sophomore, double bass), Linda Wang (junior, violin), Maristella Yim (senior, cello) and Vincenzo Zuppardo (sophomore, violin)
The band, choir and orchestra events will take place later this spring.

STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS
Arlington Veterans of Foreign Wars Scholarship
Applications are open for the Wally Luettschwager Memorial Scholarship Grant. Up to $3,000, is awarded annually in the memory of Luettschwager who served honorably in the U.S. Army in combat during the Korean War. Seniors planning on attending college or a trade school and who are the direct descendent of an honorably discharged veteran are encouraged to apply by March 1.
PATRIOT SPORTS NEWS
More than 30 members of the Stevenson boys and girls bowling teams and their coaches gathered virtually Wednesday, Jan. 6, to hear from professional bowler Liz Johnson.
The SHS coaching staff reached out to Johnson to organize the event after the Daily Herald ran an article on her in early December.
The bowling teams, along with other low-risk winter sports, are paused until schools receive approval from local and state health organizations to resume their seasons.
EDUCATION NEWS
IHSA Board Meeting Scheduled for Next Week
According to Illinois High School Association Executive Director Craig Anderson, everything is on the table for next week’s board meeting including modified and canceled seasons. According to Anderson, the board will consider starting dates for sports and if sports don’t start on those dates then the cancelation of seasons will be discussed. IHSA officials continue to push for a meeting with the Illinois Department of Public Health and Gov. Pritzker’s office.
Spring Term Delays Announced by Several Colleges
Syracuse University announced the delay of the start of its spring term by two weeks and more than a dozen other schools including Penn State and Michigan State Universities have made a similar announcement to allow for frontline workers to get vaccinated and avoid post-holiday virus flare-ups.
Local School District Joins Class-Action Lawsuit Against e-Cigarette Manufacturer
Maine Township High School District 207 will join a class-action lawsuit against Juul Labs, a manufacturer of e-cigarette and vaping devices over their alleged business practices. They join several other government agencies who allege Juul used deceptive marketing practices to entice minors.
