Parent Perceptions of High School Drug and Alcohol Use
Last year, the Stand Strong Coalition surveyed parents on their perception of student drug and alcohol use in high school. The survey results have been tabulated and this organization will present their findings along with related trends in a virtual meeting on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. Registration for this event is required to receive the Zoom link.

STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS
Stevenson Live Songwriting Program
The co-curricular performance club Stevenson Live is hosting an opportunity for students to showcase and develop their songwriting abilities now through Dec. 11. The program will be introduced today at a virtual after-school meeting. The link in their Instagram bio includes the Zoom link for today’s meeting. Future meetings for this club include a number of guest speakers and opportunities for students to learn about songwriting and recording.

Allied Spirit Revolution Information Meeting
Students interested in learning more about Allied Spirit Revolution are encouraged to attend a virtual meeting Tuesday, Oct. 13 on Zoom. Stevenson’s Allied Sports Programs are co-ed interscholastic programs that provide opportunities for students with disabilities who would not otherwise be able to participate in our athletic programs.Questions can be sent to coaches Maureen Rubenstein or Nicole Krippinger.

Athletic Cancelation Notification Methods
In the event that inclement weather, facility issues or safety concerns cause the cancelation of Stevenson athletic events, this information is usually posted on the Athletic Schedule page, in a pop-up message on the Homepage of the D125.org website, and on the Patriot Athletics Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Fall Sports Awards
Stevenson Athletics plans to hold its annual Fall Sports Awards in a virtual format this year. Circle your calendar for Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. for the event that will recognize 2020 fall athletes in girls golf, boys golf, girls tennis, girls swimming, boys cross country, girls cross country, allied bocce and student athletic training.

High school students in Georgia are still taking standardized tests this year but the degree that Georgia Milestones will count toward student grades will be lessened.

Although NYU acknowledged no wrongdoing, they agreed to several actions as part of the settlement for a recent civil rights probe.

Local Teacher named 2021 Illinois Special Education Teacher of the Year
Katie McGarvey, a Special Education Teacher at Hoffman Estates High School is being recognized as part of the Illinois State Board of Education revamped recognition categories. As a result, this District 211 teacher is the state’s first Special Education Teacher of the Year recipient.

Illinois State University Considering Canceling Spring Break 2021
To limit the spread of COVID-19, spring break at ISU may be canceled this school year. Students, faculty and staff are being surveyed and a “micro-break” is being investigated as an alternative.

Illinois Compulsory School Age May be Lowered to 5
Currently, Illinois required children between the ages of 6 and 17 to attend school. Illinois lawmakers may consider lowering the age of compulsory attendance to five years of age.
