Boys Ice Hockey
Stevenson at HOHO Tournament: The Patriots beat PREP, a combined team from 
Prospect, Rolling Meadows and Elk Grove, 4-1, before falling to Glenbrook North in a shootout, 4-3, to finish the tournament with a 3-1-1 record at Fifth Third Arena in Chicago. Junior Liam Jones had a goal and four assists on the day, and six other Patriots scored in the two games. Senior Jeremy Riback tended goal in both contests, making 14 saves against PREP and 28 versus Glenbrook North. – Boxscores: PREP | GBN

Girls Basketball
Stevenson 60, Lake Park 52: The Patriots (12-5) captured third place at the Dundee-Crown Komaromy Classic with the victory, finishing the tournament with a 3-1 record. Junior Nikki Ware scored eight of her team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter, including a couple of crucial 3-pointers, as SHS outscored the Lancers (10-4) by a 23-16 margin in the final frame. Sophomores Simone Sawyer and Eva Bardic also scored 13 points, and junior Lydia Lueck added 10. – Daily Herald

Stevenson at HOHO Tournament: At Fifth Third Arena in Chicago, the Patriots tied St. John Vianney from St. Louis, 1-1, in the afternoon, then beat Fenwick, 5-0, in the evening. Senior goalie Ben Newmark turned away all 10 shots he faced against the Friars to earn the shutout. Seniors Itai Kleiman and Josh Wright, juniors Liam Jones and Daniel Kabakov, and freshman Davis Jegers scored Stevenson’s goals. In the earlier contest, Josh scored the lone Patriot goal off an assist from Davis early in the third period. Senior goalie Jeremy Riback made 14 saves. – Boxscores: Vianney | Fenwick

Saturday, Dec. 28

Boys Ice Hockey
Stevenson 4, Maine 1: The Patriots scored all of their goals in the final 10:32 to rally for the win in their opening game in the HOHO Tournament at Fifth Third Arena in Chicago. Sophomore Rafael Biedron tied the game at 1-1, and the score remained knotted until senior Emmett Baker scored with 4:52 remaining. Junior Giorgi Gagua lit the lamp 12 seconds later, and senior Josh Wright added an insurance goal in the final minute. Senior goalie Jeremy Riback made 12 saves. – Boxscore

Wrestling
Stevenson at Fremd Invitational: Head coach Shane Cook earned his 200th career dual-meet victory, all at Stevenson, with a win over the host school. SHS tied Fremd, 38-38, but earned the victory based on having fewer forfeits during the match. Stevenson also defeated Hampshire, 66-8, before falling to Marian Central, the No. 2 team in Class 2A. Cook is in his 14th season as Stevenson’s head coach.

Boys Basketball
Marian Catholic 53, Stevenson 48: John Ittounas and RJ Holmes scored 11 points apiece, and Matthew Ambrose added 10 for the Patriots (11-3) in the third-place game at the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic. All three are seniors. RJ also grabbed 13 rebounds for SHS. – Boxscore

Maine West 61, Stevenson 48: Senior Avery King led the Patriots (11-5) with 20 points against the three-time defending tournament champion Warriors (14-1) in the semifinals of the Komaromy Classic at Dundee-Crown. Sophomore Simone Sawyer added 10 points. SHS will face Lake Park in the third-place game at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30. – Daily Herald

Stevenson 52, New Trier 22: The Patriots (11-4) outscored the Trevians 30-9 in the second half to advance to the semifinals of the 37th annual Komaromy Classic at Dundee-Crown. Sophomore Ava Bardic led SHS with 16 points and added three assists. Simone Sawyer, also a sophomore, had 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists, while senior Avery King added 10 points and a pair of steals for Stevenson, which won its fourth straight. – Daily Herald

Homewood-Flossmoor 48, Stevenson 38: Senior Matthew Ambrose led the Patriots (11-2) with 11 points and five rebounds against the eventual tournament champion Vikings (10-1) in the semifinals of the Hinsdale Holiday Classic. – Boxscore | Daily Herald

Girls Basketball
Stevenson 54, St. Charles North 46: The Patriots (10-4) went on a 16-5 run to open the fourth quarter, breaking a 31-31 tie in their opening game at the 37th annual Komaromy Classic at Dundee-Crown. After the North Stars (5-3) built a 12-point lead late in the first half, sophomore Ava Bardic hit a 3-pointer to ignite a 9-1 Patriot run. Ava led all scorers with 17 point, and sank four 3-pointers. She also had four assists and three steals. Sophomore Simone Sawyer scored 14 points and recorded eight steals.  Senior Avery King had 11 points and junior Nikki Ware added 10. – Daily Herald

Stevenson 51, Oswego East 42: The Patriots (11-1) outscored the Wolves (8-4) 17-9 in the third quarter to break an 18-18 halftime tie at the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic. Senior RJ Holmes scored eight of his game-high 14 points in the third quarter. Classmate Matt Kaznikov added 11 points for SHS. – Boxscore | Daily Herald

Stevenson 51, Glenbrook North 31: The Patriots (10-1) held the Spartans scoreless in the second quarter in their first game at the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic. SHS trailed 16-10 at the end of the first quarter before outscoring GBN 12-0 in the second. Senior Matt Kaznikov led SHS with 16 points and classmate John Ittounas added 11. Senior Matthew Ambrose collected nine points and seven rebounds, and fellow senior RJ Holmes also had seven boards. – Boxscore| Daily Herald

Boys Swimming and Diving
Stevenson at Lake County Invitational: At Highland Park High School, the Patriots won their fifth consecutive county title and eighth in the last 10 seasons. SHS amassed 457 points, ahead of runner-up Barrington (363) and seven other schools. Sophomore Jack White won the 1-meter diving championship with 427.05 points. Other individual medalists included senior AJ Carollo, who was second in the 100 backstroke (53.36) and second in the 200 freestyle (1:46.49); senior Jake Kim, second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.99) and third in the 100 freestyle (48.68); senior Jack Zhang, second in the 200 individual medley (1:59.45) and third in the 100 back (53.96); sophomore Josh Song, second in the 100 butterfly (50.85); and freshman Danny Silverstein, fourth in diving (354.45). SHS had two second-place relays: the 200 medley with Jack, Josh, Jake and senior Ari Zaritsky (1:37.49), and the 400 free with Jack, AJ, junior Dima Kobets and freshman Jonny Farber (3:17.76). – Daily Herald

Stevenson 59, Buffalo Grove 38: The host Patriots recorded 15 steals, with eight coming from sophomore Simone Sawyer, improving to 9-4 on the season. Senior Avery King led SHS with 18 points and Simone added 17. Two other Pats reached double figures: Sophomore Ava Bardic had 11 points and three steals, while junior Nikki Ware added 10 points. Senior Nikki Kolz also recorded three steals. Stevenson raced out to a 7-0 lead and was never threatened. Stevenson 4, St. Viator 2: Freshman Davis Jegers scored two goals and senior goalie Jeremy Riback turned away 20 of 22 shots at Mount Prospect Ice Arena. Davis scored the Patriots’ first two goals, one in each of the first two periods. The game was knotted at 2-2 until the final five minutes of regulation. Junior Andrew Chambers broke the tie when he scored with 4:52 remaining off an assist from classmate Liam Jones, and senior Josh Wright added an insurance goal about one minute later. Jeremy made 10 saves in the final period. Josh had the assist on Davis’ first goal, and senior Brett Stokes assisted on the second. – Boxscore

Girls Gymnastics
Stevenson at New Trier Invitational: The Patriots placed third out of 10 schools with their highest team score of the season (141.35), behind Carmel (146.175) and the host Trevians (145.15). Senior Emily Weinstein earned a career-high score while finishing second in the all-around (37.925). She won the vault (9.775), finished second in floor exercise (9.6), and was fourth on balance beam (9.325) and uneven bars (9.225). Stevenson at 54th annual Rex Whitlach Invitational: At Hinsdale Central, freshman Lorenzo Frezza (13-4) was second at 113 pounds, including a 4-3 win over the previously undefeated top seed from Sandburg in the semifinals. Sophomore Cole Rhemrev finished fourth at 120, junior Arad Peregoudov was fifth at 145, and junior Kei Yamato took seventh at 132. Friday, Dec. 20
Boys Basketball
Stevenson 74, Yorkville Christian 38: Senior Matt Kaznikov scored a team-high 18 points and classmate Matthew Ambrose added 16 for the host Patriots (9-1), who never trailed in the non-conference contest against the Mustangs (8-2). Both hit four 3-pointers. Seniors John Ittounas and RJ Holmes added 11 and 10 points, respectively. RJ added eight rebounds. SHS led 25-9 at the end of the first quarter and 42-17 at halftime. Boys Swimming and Diving
Stevenson 118, Zion-Benton 43: Seniors Jake Kim and Jack Zhang each won two events for SHS (2-1 overall, 2-0 North Suburban Conference) in the Patriot Aquatic Center. Jake captured the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.03) and 100-yard butterfly (54.80), while Jack claimed the 50 free (22.91) and 100 free (49.34). Other individual winners for the Patriots included senior AJ Carollo in the 500 free (4:57.38), and three sophomores: Josh Song in the 200 individual medley (2:08.06), Brandon Xiong in the 100 backstroke (59.94) and Sully Swanson in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.72). Stevenson also won all three relays — the 200 medley (1:46.23), 200 free (1:34.69) and 400 free (3:33.51) — to complete a sweep of all 12 events.
