33 Earn Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
Thirty-three students earned regional awards in the 2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition at the University of Iowa. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the country’s longest-running recognition program for creative students in grades 7–12.
Approximately 350,000 works of art and writing are submitted annually, covering 29 categories. Eighteen SHS students earned Gold Key awards, given to the top 5-7 percent of all entries. Gold Key winners receive automatic consideration for national medals, which will be announced in March.
Sophomore Bella Kim earned four Gold Key awards and classmate Emily Liu received three. Four seniors garnered two Gold Keys: Emily Luo, Winston Wang, Alyssa Zhang and Daniel Zhu. Other Gold Key winners included juniors Cheryl Chen, Helen Han, Olivia Lamberti, Janice Lee, Anushka Somani, Patrick Tong and Bridget Zhu, and sophomores Lily Jiang, Katie Lee, Brianna Liu, Laya Reddy and Shayaan Shaik. Cheryl’s short story, “Peaches,” also received an American Voices and Visions nomination, which is given to one piece in the regional considered to be “best of show.” Click here to see all of Stevenson’s award winners.
HOSA Members Raising Awareness About Childhood Cancer
Several members of the HOSA (Future Health Professionals) club will head to Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills this weekend to increase awareness about childhood cancers. Club members will be at the mall from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, handing out informational brochures and gold childhood cancer awareness ribbons, plus colorful pencils for young children. Last semester, club members visited fourth-graders at a local elementary school, making holiday cards for hospitalized children.
Consortium Jazz Band Concert Postponed
Tuesday’s Consortium Jazz Band Concert was postponed due to the icy weather conditions. The reschedule date has not been determined.
New Date for PPA Meetings
Weather forced the postponement of Tuesday’s Patriot Parent Association executive board and general meetings. They have been rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 13.

The summer school registration website will be unavailable from 3-5 p.m. today for maintenance.

Boys Basketball Games Rescheduled for Today
The varsity and sophomore boys basketball games scheduled for Tuesday at Lake Zurich were postponed until today due to the weather. The varsity and sophomore boys basketball games are scheduled to be streamed live by the NFHS Network. The sophomore contest starts at 5:30, followed by the varsity at 7. Patriettes Eighth at Disney Competition
The varsity Patriettes placed eighth in the Large Jazz Division at the Universal Dance Association national championships last weekend at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. JV Hockey Team Wins SHL President Trophy
The Junior Varsity Gold boys ice hockey team won the Scholastic Hockey League JV President Trophy for recording the league’s best regular-season record this season. Stevenson finished with 16 wins, five losses and three shootout (overtime) losses for a total of 35 points, two ahead of Glenbrook North. The Patriots had the best offense and defense in the league, scoring 78 goals in 24 games while surrendering 45.

SDM is looking for extraordinary individuals who have an authentic interest in helping adults with developmental disabilities. Join a team and compete in a three-hour dance marathon that will raise money for the Riverside Foundation. This isn’t for everybody; only for those with grit, persistence, stamina, and above all, the will to do something amazing. The final day to make your team of six to eight people is Friday. Interested in playing girls lacrosse this spring? An informational meeting for players and parents will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 in the Little Theater section of the Performing Arts Center.
