Stevenson 60, Hinsdale Central 37: The Patriots cruised to victory in the consolation bracket championship game at the fourth annual Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic. SHS (12-3) never trailed against the Red Devils (4-8), building a 15-5 lead after the first quarter that eventually grew to a 26-point margin in the second half. Junior John Ittounas led all scorers with 14 points and also had five assists. Junior Matt Kaznikov added 10 points while sophomore Evan Ambrose had eight. Senior Luke Chieng distributed eight assists and had five points, while junior R.J. Holmes scored six points and grabbed five rebounds. The Patriots shot 61.1 percent (22-of-36) from the floor, and had assists on 22 of their 27 field goals. Stevenson 56, Trinity 42: Freshman Simone Sawyer and junior Avery King each scored 14 points to lead the Patriots (11-7) to victory in their finale at the 36th annual Charger-Komaromy Classic at Dundee-Crown. SHS, which went 2-2 in the tournament and finished in seventh place, trailed 19-15 after the first quarter but outscored the Blazers 31-11 to take control. Avery pulled down nine rebounds and had two steals, while Simone grabbed seven boards. Sophomore Nikki Ware and freshman Ava Bardic scored nine points apiece. Ava added four assists. Senior Kristin Hill had six points and four rebounds for SHS, which plays host to Waukegan at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5. Avery and Kristin were named to the all-tournament team.

Stevenson at Homewood-Flossmoor Girls Invitational: Sophomore Sara Sulejmani won her weight class, recording two falls after earning a 6-3 decision in the opening round.

Stevenson at Conant Quadrangular: The Patriots (11-4) won top honors by defeating No. 17 Conant (44-28) in between victories over Hersey (72-3) and Neuqua Valley (42-34). In the Neuqua Valley match, SHS rallied from a 25-12 deficit. Pins from seniors Jason Bickers (145 pounds) and Ivor Gueorguiev (160), plus a forfeit at 152, set up senior Michael Phelps, who delivered a pin at 182 for the lead, just as he did against Conant. Senior Yoni Leibovitz also had a pin at 120 against NV. – Daily Herald

Stevenson 59, Richards 48: Senior Luke Chieng scored a game-high 22 points and junior R.J. Holmes pulled down 15 rebounds and had four assists as the Patriots (11-3) won their consolation bracket semifinal game at the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic. The Bulldogs (8-4) jumped out to an early seven-point lead, but Luke scored nine points in the second quarter as SHS rallied to tie the game at halftime, 27-27. Stevenson pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Richards, 17-6. Juniors John Ittounas and Matt Kaznikov scored 14 and 10 points, respectively. Buffalo Grove 37, Stevenson 26: Junior Avery King led the Patriots (10-7) with 10 points and 11 rebounds at the Charger-Komaromy Classic at Dundee-Crown. She also had three blocked shots. Freshman Simone Sawyer scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds. The two teams played Dec. 17, with the Bison winning by a 47-31 score.

New Trier Green 3, Stevenson 0: The Patriots dropped the quarterfinal game to their Scholastic Hockey League rival at the 26th annual Blackhawk Holiday Hockey Tournament at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

Stevenson 7, New Trier Blue 2: Seniors Seth Cohen and Sam Frishman each scored two goals for the Patriots at the 26th annual Blackhawk Holiday Hockey Tournament at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville. The game was tied 1-1 in the first period when senior Billy Kopka scored the first of six unanswered goals by SHS. Junior Brett Stokes and senior Sam Shellist also scored for Stevenson, which won for the ninth time in its last 11 games. Seniors Zach Wesley and Jake DeMaio each recorded two assists. Junior goalie Ben Newmark made eight saves for the Patriots, who outshot the Trevians, 34-10.

Stevenson 60, Urban Prep Englewood 30: The Patriots held the Lions to two points in the opening quarter and breezed to victory in the consolation bracket at the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic. Junior Matt Kaznikov scored a game-high 14 points for SHS (10-3), while classmate R.J. Holmes had 11 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Senior Kyree Lewis added nine points and four rebounds. Fenwick 49, Stevenson 46: Junior Avery King led SHS (10-6) with 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots at the 36th annual Charger-Komaromy Classic at Dundee-Crown. Freshmen Ava Bardic and Simone Sawyer contributed 11 and nine points, respectively. Simone had a team-high three assists and four steals, while Avery made three steals.

Stevenson 51, Hampshire 40: The Patriots (10-5) overcame an early deficit in their first-round game at the 36th annual Charger-Komaromy Classic at Dundee-Crown. SHS trailed 18-11 in the second quarter before clamping down defensively on the Whips (9-3). Sophomore Nikki Ware sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Stevenson a 21-20 halftime lead. She finished the game with 10 points. Junior Avery King led all scorers with 16 points, and she also had team highs with six rebounds and three steals. Stevenson at Blackhawk Holiday Hockey Tournament: The Patriots defeated Warren, 6-0, in the morning and Maine Township, 2-1, in the evening at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville. In the nightcap, senior Sam Frishman scored the winning goal with 2:25 remaining, off an assist from junior Josh Wright. Senior Max Slavin opened the scoring with a first-period goal assisted by sophomore Liam Jones. Junior goalie Jeremy Riback made 14 saves for SHS, which outshot its opponent, 29-15. In the opener, Stevenson outshot the Blue Devils, 41-8. Senior Billy Kopka scored two goals and added an assist. Liam and Max also scored, as did seniors Zach Wesley and Justin Roseman. St. Charles East 51, Stevenson 48: At the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic, the Saints (8-5) hit a 3-pointer with 23 seconds to play to capture the opening round game and snap the Patriots’ four-game winning streak. SHS (9-3) rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit and tied the game at 48-48 on a jumper by junior R.J. Holmes with less than a minute to play. Junior Matt Kaznikov led the Pats with 13 points (11 in the second half) and eight rebounds, while R.J. and sophomore Evan Ambrose each scored 10 points. Stevenson at New Trier Holiday Invitational: Missing their top gymnast due to illness, junior Emily Weinstein, the Patriots placed fifth out of eight teams with a score of 135.2. Senior Sarina Johnson was sixth on vault (9.3), sophomore Hannah Brand was seventh on balance beam (8.95), and freshman Ally Gitler was 11th in the all-around (34.675). – Official Results|Daily Herald

Stevenson 50, Mundelein 45: Senior Luke Chieng scored a career-high 24 points as the visiting Patriots (9-2, 3-1) won their fourth game in a row. Luke went 9-of-12 from the floor, including five of six from 3-point range, and recorded a career high in points for the second straight game. He scored 22 against Prospect on Dec. 15. SHS held the Mustangs (6-5, 1-3) to 13-of-45 shooting, and limited them to two points in the second quarter. Stevenson led by six at halftime and extended the lead to 10 after three quarters. Mundelein closed to within 48-45 late, but sophomore Evan Ambrose sank a pair of free throws with 5.9 seconds remaining to ensure victory. Stevenson 49, Carmel 45: With the game tied after three quarters at 40-40, the visiting Patriots (9-5) held the Corsairs (5-6) to five points the rest of the way. Freshman Simone Sawyer led all scorers with 21 points, and hit three 3-pointers. SHS sank seven of nine free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter, and was 12 of 18 in the game. Junior Avery King connected on a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 10 points. Freshman Ava Bardic added seven points.
Boys Swimming and Diving
Stevenson 103, Glenbrook South 83: In a battle of two state trophy contenders, the Patriots prevailed in Glenview. SHS (4-0) won six of the 12 events and broke two GBS pool records, with Notre Dame-bound senior Topher Stensby having a hand in both. He won the 50-yard freestyle in 20.76 seconds, breaking the pool record of 20.77 set in 2010. In the 200 freestyle relay, Topher swam the anchor leg as Stevenson won with a time of 1:25.06, breaking the pool record of 1:25.60 set in 2013. His relay mates were fellow seniors Richard Lee, Joseph Song and Max Ryaguzov. The 200 free relay time was the fastest in the state this season. Stevenson also recorded a state-best time in the 400 free relay (3:10.62) behind Topher, senior Nathan Gates and juniors Jake Kim and Jack Zhang. Topher also won the 100 free (46.37), while Jack captured the 100 backstroke (53.82). Freshman Jack White won the 1-meter diving (226.95). The Titans won the 200 free in a state-best time (1:42.15).
