Class of 2018 Graduates Friday Evening

Commencement for the Class of 2018 will take place at 5 p.m. Friday at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates. As of Monday, there are 1,032 graduating seniors. The two seniors chosen to speak at commencement this year are Hanna Kunin and Jackelyn Castaneda.

Doors will open to the public at 3:30. Graduates must report no later than 4 p.m. For more information on graduation, including admission and directions to the Sears Centre, visit www.d125.org/graduation.

Class of 2019 Meningitis Vaccination Requirement

All students in the Class of 2019 are required by state law to have a meningococcal (MCV4) vaccination after age 16. This requirement must be completed and recorded before senior year begins. Parents should check with their doctor for their child’s current immunization status. As soon as the requirement is met, please provide verification to the nurses. Verification of immunization can be faxed to 847-634-2905 or 847-634-2902. Questions can be directed to the nurses at the following numbers: 847-415-4019 or 847-415-4028 (East Building) or 847-415-4025 or 847-415-4039 (West Building).

Four Juniors Honored in National Writing Contest

Four juniors earned honors in the annual National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing competition. Adele Lee, Johnna Geick, Sanjana Jain and Katherine Zeng were among 461 juniors across the country who were nominated for awards, and are in a group of 226 (including 31 from Illinois) receiving Certificates for Superior Writing.

220 Seniors Honored for Language Achievement

More than 20 percent of Stevenson’s Class of 2018 will have special recognition from the state of Illinois on its diplomas. There are 220 seniors who have earned the Seal of Biliteracy or the Commendation Toward Biliteracy for earning proficiency in English and one additional language.

Of the 220, 192 earned the Seal of Biliteracy and 28 received the Commendation Toward Biliteracy. Most of the honors came in Spanish, with 143 earning the seal and 23 receiving commendation. Thirty students earned seals in Mandarin Chinese, five in German, four in Russian, three in Hebrew, two each in French, Polish and Latin, and one in Italian. Three students earned commendation in French, one in Russian and one in German. Click here to see all graduating seniors earning this language honor.

History Bowl, Bee Shout Out

Social Studies teacher Peter Anderson, sponsor of the school’s History Bowl and Bee team, talked with the Pioneer Press about his squad’s success this year. Stevenson won the junior varsity division national championship at the eighth annual National History Bowl and Bee, and sophomore Govind Prabhakar captured national titles in two events. Junior Helping Improve Lincolnshire Park

Among the next crop of Stevenson students working on their Eagle Scout projects is Mark Hardy. The junior, a member of Boy Scout Troop 78, is refurbishing North Park in Lincolnshire with new boardwalks. Read more about his project.

Sociology Teacher, Alumnus Featured on Website

Sociology teacher Chris Salituro was featured in this recent article on the American Sociological Association website, discussing the number of students who enroll in high school sociology courses. Salituro is the association’s high school program director. Also mentioned in the article is one of Salituro’s former students, SHS alumnus Mark Lockefeer (Class of 2004), a former Marine now enrolled at Michigan State University’s law school.

Students “De-stress” With Therapy Dogs

The Student Services Division brought in several therapy dogs on Wednesday as part of its annual “DeStress Days” events during final exams. Approximately 200 students signed up to visit with the dogs in the College Career Center. Therapy dogs came from the following organizations: Canine Therapy Corps, K9 Reading Buddies of the North Shore, Pet Partners of Greater Chicago, Fine Canine dog training and the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Junior’s Family Raising Money for Cystic Fibrosis

Junior Jonathan Distel and his family are inviting the SHS community to participate in the Barrington Great Strides 5K Walk on Sunday, June 3 to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Wednesday, May 23 Varsity Results

Girls Lacrosse

Stevenson at IHSA Warren Sectional: The top-seeded Patriots (18-3) crushed fourth-seeded Carmel in the semifinals, 13-3, advancing to the sectional championship game against No. 2 seed Lake Forest at 7 p.m. Friday. The title game will be played at Warren’s O’Plaine campus, 500 N. O’Plaine Rd., in Gurnee. No details from Wednesday’s game were available.

Boys Lacrosse

Stevenson at IHSA St. Viator Sectional: In Arlington Heights, second-seeded St. Viator defeated the sixth-seeded Patriots, 14-3, in the semifinals. Seniors Caleb Benoit-DiMaria and Ryan Walsh scored one goal apiece for SHS (7-13), while junior Cole Okmin had a goal and an assist. Senior Austin Masters also recorded an assist. Senior goalie Chad Winter made eight saves.

Boys Volleyball

Stevenson at IHSA Lakes Regional: Sixth-seeded Carmel rallied past the third-seeded Patriots, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22, and capture the regional championship. Senior Leo Chen led SHS (27-10) with 14 kills and classmate Matt Cliffer had eight. Junior Will Sorenson was 76-of-78 setting with 30 assists, and also served three aces. Junior Thomas Finn recorded seven kills and made nine digs. Seniors George Lie and Alex Bian made 14 and 13 digs, respectively, for Stevenson, which finished the season with its highest win total since going 31-5 in 2013.
