New Wrinkle for State Chess Tournament
The Illinois High School Association has added an extra layer to its state tournament series for chess, introducing sectional tournaments for the first time. All sectionals will be held Saturday, with the state finals Feb. 9-10 in Peoria. Teams will qualify for state based on the number of points they score at the sectional level. Stevenson will participate in the Palatine Sectional.

Girls Gymnastics
Stevenson at North Suburban Conference Championships: At Libertyville, the Patriots finished a close second to Mundelein, which won its fifth consecutive league title. SHS posted a score of 140.925, its best of the season, to the Mustangs’ 141.3. Freshman Hannah Brand finished third in the all-around (35.7), and placed second on floor exercise (9.35) and third on balance beam (9.1). Sophomore Emily Weinstein, competing for the first time since breaking an ankle in practice Dec. 28, finished second on bars (9.2). Junior Zoe Hinz was fourth on beam (9.05), junior Kaylee Brady took fifth on vault (9.0) and junior Sarina Johnson finished fifth on floor (8.9). – Daily Herald
Boys Swimming and Diving
Stevenson 126, Waukegan 23: The visiting Patriots (5-1) won 11 of 12 events in their final dual meet of the season. Senior Michael Lee and junior Filip Mihajlovic each won two events and swam on a victorious relay. Michael captured the 50-yard freestyle (23.29) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.52), and swam a leg of the 200 free relay (1:39.61) with freshman Dima Kobets, senior Andrew Luo and junior Michael Garcia. Filip captured the 200 free (1:57.80) and 100 backstroke (1:04.14), and was part of the 400 free relay (3:40.46) with Dima, Andrew and senior Spencer Guercio. Stevenson’s other victories came from Dima in the 500 free (5:19.02), Andrew in the 100 butterfly (56.40), freshman Anthony Lin in the 200 IM (2:15.76), and the 200 medley relay team of Andrew, junior Nikolas Ebeling, freshman Christopher Oei and senior John Tan (1:46.58).
Wrestling
Stevenson 60, Waukegan 6: With the road victory, the Patriots are on the cusp of claiming their fourth consecutive North Suburban Conference championship. SHS can grab the league crown today if it wins its match at Lake Forest, which begins at 5:30.
Patriettes, Boys Bowling at State Finals
The defending state champion Patriettes will begin defense of their title today at the Illinois High School Association Class 3A competitive dance state finals in Bloomington. Stevenson is scheduled to perform in the preliminaries at 3:47 p.m. today. The state finals will be streamed live by IHSA-TV (fee required). To follow results from the state finals, visit the IHSA website. The boys bowling team also is competing in the IHSA state finals, at St. Clair Bowl in Fairview Heights near St. Louis. Placements for Dance Students With Experience
Students who have dance experience and are not taking a dance class at SHS this year can audition for placement in Dance 2, 3, or 4 on Thursday in Dance Studio 2010 (next to the Health classrooms). Students can audition from 7:30-8:15 a.m. or 3:30-4:15 p.m. Questions can be directed to Mrs. Dauphin at adauphin@d125.org.
The North Shore chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has two $1,000 scholarship opportunities available for senior students. The General Henry Dearborn American History Scholarship is for a student majoring in American history. This scholarship is not based on financial need, and does not require attending an institution of higher learning in Illinois. The Illinois Daughters of the American Revolution Scholarship is for a graduating senior who will be attending a junior college or a four-year college or university in Illinois, and is based on financial need. Please stop in the College Career Center (Room 1123) to pick up an application for these scholarships. The scholarship application deadline is Thursday.
