Stevenson’s Political Action Club hosted a “Parade to the Polls” on Saturday morning, led by the SHS Marching Patriots. Senior Named Semifinalist in Siemens STEM Competition

Senior Adit Ghosh has been selected as a semifinalist in the prestigious Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. He is the fourth semifinalist from Stevenson in the past five years, joining Jeremy Lan (Class of 2015), Rohan Dasika (Class of 2013) and Rahul Maramreddy (Class of 2013). Lan was chosen in 2014 while Dasika and Maramreddy were picked in 2012.

Ghosh was honored for his research project conducted as part of the school’s SPARK (Science Professionals As Resource Knowledge) program this summer. His project, “Existence of Hairpin Between Alpha Helix 6 and Helix 7 of Proapoptotic BAK Protein,” was one of 498 projects selected. More than 1,600 were submitted nationwide. Ghosh did his research work under the tutelage of Dr. Kyoung J. Oh, Assistant Professor of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

Ghosh is one of 16 Siemens semifinalists from Illinois, and the only one attending a Lake County high school. Semifinalists’ projects will be judged to determine which ones advance to six regional competitions in November. Regional winners advance to the national finals held at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in December, where $500,000 in scholarships will be awarded, including two top prizes of $100,000.
